The settlers lives mainly consisted of harvesting coconuts, growing vegetables and fruit and of course sustaining themselves through fishing. In those early days reaching Ko Tao was a dangerous boat journey from the nearby islands or the mainland, if and when the weather and seas permitted, but the population continued to grow steadily all the same, even when the easy life was hard and without much reward.Kohtao is a nice island northeast of Surat Thani in Thailand. Not like a few years ago, guests can find now everything from low-priced plain wooden bungalows with thatched roofs to stylish expensive places with a private swimming pool and facilities. KoTao now has twenty four hour electricity on the island too and finally they have had a water reservoir built to make sure that even in the dryest periods there is enough water for all.

Here they found something more then just a new island to explore and soon the back packer network was buzzing about the fantastic newly found tropical island paradise of KoTao. Captivated by the pure white sandy beaches, the back of beyond aura, and of course the cheap living, back packers soon arrived in droves. The prisoners were all repatriated and transported to Suratthani on the mainland and Ko Tao was a desert island yet again. On the 18th of june 1899, the then king of Thailand King Chulalongkorn (Rama 5 1868-1910) visited the island and left his monogram as evidence on a huge boulder at Jor Por Ror Bay next to Sairee Beach.

Black Tip Dive Resort is situated in the beautiful Tanote Bay on the east side of the island, don't be put off with it being a dive resort as they also do accommodation only as well. This is a clean well run family resort with very friendly staff, and nice bungalows situated behind the restaurant and reception area, it also welcomes families with children as it is also a very safe beach for them to play on and explore.


This is a great place for snorkelling, as this side of the island has some of the best coral and the clearest waters on the island. You can do you Padi dive course or even your open water course here (Black Tip is a PADI Gold Palm 5 Star IDC Resort), or if you're not that adventurous you can hire a mask, snorkel and some fins and visit the live coral and all the different selection of fish just 20-30 meters off shore.

They can also offer wake boarding, inflatables a variety of different water sports to suit all the family members young to old, or you can do what most people do when they come to this beach, lay on the beach and soak up the sun. The restaurant has great views of the beach and surrounding area and offers both western and excellent traditional Thai style food.
